It never fails to surprise me when someone looks at me with a puzzled look when they hear that I work in sound healing. It has been almost 5.5 years since I started my work as a sound healing practitioner. Back then, there was only a number of us in Singapore, but now, it is probably catching up to the number of yoga teachers. There was a joke I heard back then, ‘if you throw a stone, you’ll easily hit a yoga teacher.’ Now, I believe the joke can be used on ‘sound healers’. It is not a bad thing really. We are all here to shift the vibrations of the world after all, with the right intentions and right training under our belt.
Science is catching up with the ancient modality of sound, with sound cymatics to show the beautiful patterns made by salt or grains when sound is produced on a metal plate. As well as Dr. Emoto’s research on the beautiful patterns formed by water that has been exposed to positive vibrations of music or kind words. If you want to geek out on the science of their research, click through to read more. Our body is made up of 50-70% water, so when sound vibrations passes through us, these sound waves ripples the water in our body, potentially loosening and shaking up blockages within that we might not even know exist. When things are shaken up, our body awakens to process the blockages and detox can happen. That is why it is crucial to drink plenty of water in the 48 hours following a sound healing session, to aid your body in detoxing what needs to exit. While Science is catching up, not every human being is caught up yet. So if you are only hearing about sound healing for the first time in your life, fret not. Here’s a summary of what to expect when you attend a sound healing session.
We know that music can evoke emotions in us. When we hear a piece of slow, emotive music, we tend to slow down and become emotional as the music guides us through the emotional landscape within us. We could become sad and tear up, as it reminds us of certain memories. Likewise, when we hear a piece of fun, rhythmic, groovy song, we feel its rhythm moving through our bodies, making us start to tap our feet, or fingers and want to stand up to dance along. We are all vibrational beings, and we get easily influenced by what we hear, not just by our ears, but every skin cell in our body. Did you know the receptors in skin cells, are similar to the ones in the ears, and respond to pressure created by airflow? This is why we want to immerse ourselves in a sound healing session, also known as ‘sound bath’, where the sound healing practitioner plays a series of sound healing instruments, all with the intention of healing, not performing. Imagine your body being an out of tune guitar, and attending a sound healing session, is akin to having all your internal organs getting a tune up back to the right vibrational frequency so that it can function at its optimum level with the right vibrational frequency it was meant to be, therefore reducing the possibilities of ‘dis-ease’, when your body can be at ease at the right frequency levels it was meant to function in.
When you lie down to immerse yourself in sound vibrations during a sound healing session, you may find yourself drifting from Beta brainwave (awaken) state, to Alpha brainwave (relaxed) state, to Theta brainwave (lucid dreaming) state, to Delta brainwave (deep sleep, snoring) state, and for some Gamma brainwave (in the zone) state. Every person in the group will likely experience different states in the same sound journey. It all depends on individuals and their resonance with the instruments played. The wonderful thing about sound healing is that, it is usually safe and without the side effects of medication for example. Sound frequencies will trigger your body’s own innate healing wisdom to do what is necessary for your healing journey, whether it is a physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual healing that will happen in each session. The important aspect while attending a sound healing session is to carry the right intentions for yourself. Set clear intentions for your healing before the start of each session, because Sound frequencies + Intentions = Manifestation of healing, as researched by sound pioneer, Jonathan Goldman.
Another scientific aspect of sound healing is that humming (with your voice) and the use of tuning forks, can stimulate the production of nitric oxide (NO), a molecule with various health benefits. Nitric oxide plays a role in improving circulation, blood flow, and cell efficiency, which can contribute to relaxation, pain relief, and immune function. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning it widens blood vessels, which can improve blood flow and oxygen delivery throughout the body. It also has antimicrobial properties, acting as an antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial agent. Therefore, by promoting nitric oxide production and influencing brainwave patterns, sound healing can contribute to stress reduction, improved sleep, enhanced immune function, and pain relief.
Sound healing benefits includes but not limited to:
* Stimulate production of Nitric Oxide (NO).
* Reduced stress, anxiety & depression.
* Fewer mood swings.
* Lower blood pressure.
* Lower cholesterol levels.
* Better pain relief management.
* Reduced risk of strokes and coronary artery disease.
* Improved sleep.
* Enhanced immune function.
* Enhanced insights and clarity of mind.
* Enhanced spiritual connections.
If you are curious to experience what sound healing can do for you, reach out, or join us in one of our upcoming sound journeys, available for booking on the website. If you prefer privacy, 1:1 healing sessions or private groups are available upon request as well. If you wish to learn more about sound healing and potentially decide to become a sound healer yourself, enquire with me about sound healing training. We do have an introductory online training to learn to use the frequencies of Tuning Forks for home first aid, if you just want to learn how to use sound to heal yourself at home or with your family and friends.
I hope this article shed some light on the power of sound healing and what it can do for you. Knowing what it is, and what it does is only the first step. Now you need to experience it for yourself first hand to feel what it’s like. Here’s to raising your vibrations to better health, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually through healing sounds.
