Why I Do It? (Sound Healing)

Why do I do what I do now? Sound healing has become more popular over the last 5 years, but before I took my son to our first parent and child singing bowl workshop, I had no idea what sound healing even was. Bought my first bowl after the workshop simply because I was resonating with the sound of the bowl and I saw how my son could gain that bit of focus time to rim the bowl to make it sing. It was before he was diagnosed with ADHD, and a moderate spectrum of ASD. To say that sound healing changed my life is an understatement. I had no idea how much I needed those sounds back then. It brought me back to the present. It brought me back that moment of mindful consciousness, to remember to focus on the present, the NOW. It brought me the moments of stillness and peace that I craved and needed. Did I decide there and then that I wanted to become a sound healing practitioner? Of course not. It was through working with 1 bowl, then 7 bowls, then my ears opened up to the world of sounds, to the vast Universe of sounds that awaits to be discovered by me. Of course I had my doubts when I begin. Am I really going to do this? Am I really going to just play singing bowls for people? Can this even be a career? I didn’t care what the mind thought back then. I just followed my heart and the sounds that led me deeper into the rabbit hole of sound healing, and here I am, using sounds to bring peace back to myself over and over again, and to bring that same peace to those who come to experience sound healing with me.

At the recent Wellness Fair that I attended, someone stopped by the table, and when I handed her a flyer, she told me she does not resonate with sound healing. It didn’t work for her. Of course, I had to dig deeper of her why. Turns out, she had experienced 2 bad sound healing sessions back in Bali. She specifically said not 1 but 2, so she did gave it another chance. She said that it was so bad that she wanted to get out of it. That sounded like it was a really bad experience for her, and it was honestly sad to hear. I explained to her why she should not discount sound healing as a modality because of previous bad experiences, as it could be due to a variety of reasons. One, she was not explained what sound healing is, and what it could do to one’s consciousness, therefore not ready to receive it. Two, she was not ready to face what was brought to the surface by the sounds that was triggering her. Three, maybe she just was unlucky to book into a sound session that was not resonating with her, or was played without the right intentions. It is sad that she was not being guided into sound healing gently, to understand the power of sounds properly, and therefore dismissing the modality of sound healing in its entirety. This is why I have always emphasised the importance of knowing what you are signing up for, and knowing the background of the sound healing practitioner’s sound practices, and intentions of space holding using the power of sounds.

“Every illness is a musical problem – the healing, a musical solution.” ~ Novalis

I love sound healing because it brought me clarity, peace, acceptance & mindful consciousness in my own life, and so much joy when I use them to help those who needed the right sounds at the right time. I did not become a sound healer because it was becoming trendy (it wasn’t trendy when I first started.) I definitely did not just buy the bowls for fun to play around. I am a Manifesting Generator in Human Design, and Capricorn Rising, that means I can dabble my passion in many things at the same time, and not quite finishing them, but I am still continuously pursuing sound healing learnings to this day, because I found them to be fascinating and there’s never ending things to learn about the science of sound healing. Being a Capricorn, means I need my structure and I can be so serious in my learnings when I want it badly, and I work damn hard for what I want to learn, and yes I can be ambitious about my desire to bring sound healing into the world. When I hear about people having bad sound healing experiences, it saddens me because that probably means they didn’t meet a sound healer who is doing this work for the right reasons perhaps? Just pop into IG and you can see many many people playing around with sound tools, but I just really really hope everyone who buys and plays with them are doing so for the right reasons, and not just because it looks hippie and cool, and all blissful and trendy to be a sound healer. (Those are really not valid reasons to be a sound healer in my humble opinion!)

Sound Journey to the Himalayas ~ Sound Healing with Himalayan Singing Bowls

I use sound not just solely for relaxation or bringing people to sleep. Because sound is so powerful, one needs to use it wisely with the right intentions and intensity for the right purposes. Powerful sounds can trigger some to relive trauma, or to release unconscious emotional baggages, and sound on the physical body can definitely alleviate and even sometimes release chronic aches and pains. This is what I hope to achieve through sound healing. To bring about an actual physical healing, emotional releases, mental confrontation and awareness of one’s triggers in life. Relaxation, sleep and stress relief are simply bonuses on the side. While sound healing might seem like some woo woo spiritual hippie circles in some opinions still, there is more than what is really going on. If one is entering into a sound healing session knowing exactly what they are hoping to heal, and having an open mind and heart to what could come up for them, then that would be a powerful session for both attendees and the sound healing practitioner. I am still constantly learning from my attendees, what sounds was doing to them and for them, and never cease to be fascinated by what goes on for each individuals, attending even the same session. If you happen to be one of those people who have had a bad experience with sound healing in one of your first sessions, PLEASE, I URGE YOU, do not make the mistake of never attending another sound healing session, as that would be doing yourself a big disservice. Keep an open heart and mind and find another sound healing practitioner that you could resonate with and give it another shot. It could turn out to be exactly what you needed to move through with life.

“Sound has a geometry of its own. If you utter the right kinds of sounds, it will touch and embrace the forms. There is tremendous power in this.” ~ Sadhguru
